The Universe is Musical

Inspired by ancient Buddhist prayer wheels, The Universe is Musical, hopes to stand as a reminder that curiosity, and innovation, develop practices, to connect to sounds, that already exist.

Sitting in our fast-paced modern societies, we remain disconnected from that which is part of our daily lives. While trees may have provided material for the most common wooden prayer wheels, we will tap into the present time with one of it's most abundant materials, recycled scrap .

The final installation using everyday materials, as well the the production of the installation alongside our neighbors, aims to embody a sense of resilience in the face of the climate crisis, melodiously.

A guest artist and educator, Stone Slade, with her inclination toward music, and recycled wonders, lent an ear to stay in tune. She accompanied me over a few weeks, while engaging the neighborhood at Plaza Borinquen Activations to contribute to the final creation. Their work speaks for the innovative risks that the creators made with simple everyday materials. Their pride showed when they visited their works that carried the spark of this creation.

We’re often led through life in unexpected ways. No matter where we come from, or the languages we speak, our hands want to make something beautiful. It’s not in the things we have or want, but rather in the purpose it serves. For which there often seems to only be one. What happens of all the things that continue their existence beyond its purpose? Especially the things that are made to last forever?

Growing together gives us place, and as such purpose. But one that leaves us questioning, learning, searching for more. What grows? What stays the same?

A special thanks to Nehemiah Johnson. His patience exceeds his talent! Nehemiah was instrumental in creating the most technically challenging part of the installation - the scales.

The one is dedicated to Dad, the ultimate tinkerer! Happy heavenly birthday! He would have been 79 years old today.

Artist Bio

A multimedia artist, Diya Ghosh, uses recycled materials, and space to create with others. The conversations encouraged by Diya, direct our attentions to the authenticity trapped in the process of creation, brought to life by the materials themselves. Her painting and assemblage art practices keep her grounded and engaged with her own processes exploring themes of feminism, decolonization and healing. What was, informs what is, and yet becomes something more than imagined. Diya offers classes and workshops at Tuk Tak Studio, Needham, MA.
